Wheelchair accessible van hire in Spain: where to find one and how to book

Wheelchair accessible van hire in Spain is possible: ramp vans you can drive yourself exist, but they are spread thinly and rarely appear on the big car hire websites. This guide explains where to look and how to get one that actually fits your chair.

In short: You can hire a wheelchair accessible van in Spain, mainly around big cities and tourist areas. But there are few, and they rarely appear on comparison sites. Ask early. A normal car licence is enough. Many companies deliver to the airport. Check the van fits your chair before you pay.

Why you will not find one on the usual car hire sites

The big rental brands at Spanish airports rarely have adapted vehicles. Ramp vans usually belong to small local companies or to firms that adapt vehicles. Many of them only take bookings by phone or email. That is why a search often comes back empty even when a van exists nearby.

Where to find wheelchair accessible van hire in Spain

Supply is concentrated around the big cities and the main tourist areas: Madrid, Barcelona, the Costa del Sol, the Costa Blanca, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. In smaller towns you may need a van delivered from the nearest city, which adds cost. In every case, availability drops sharply in spring and summer, so ask weeks or months ahead.

The practical questions

  • Licence: a standard car licence (category B) covers vans of up to 3,500 kg and nine seats, which includes the usual ramp vans.
  • Airport pick-up: most adapted-van companies are not at the airport, but many deliver to the terminal for a supplement. Book Aena's free assistance at least 48 hours before your flight if you also need help inside the airport.
  • Gearbox: many ramp vans are manual. If you need an automatic, say so first.
  • Price: compare the total, not the daily rate: insurance and excess, deposit, mileage limit and delivery all change it.

Make sure it fits your chair

Door height, headroom, the ramp's maximum load and the restraint system decide whether a van works for you. Here is the full checklist.
