Long-term wheelchair accessible van hire in Spain: options for one to six months

Wintering on the coast, caring for a relative or working in Spain for a season: when you need a van with a ramp for months rather than days, the usual options do not fit well.

Updated 26 October 2026 · AbleVan · 3 min read

In short: Long-term wheelchair accessible van hire is not a standard product in Spain. Daily hire gets expensive over months, and leasing (renting) usually means multi-year contracts that require Spanish residency. The realistic route is to ask rental companies for an extended hire, well in advance.

Part of our guide to wheelchair accessible van hire in Spain.

Why it is hard to find

Adapted vehicles are scarce in Spain, even for short trips. Most rental companies with ramp vans price them by the day or the week. Very few publish monthly rates, so long stays are agreed case by case, if at all.

Long-term van hire, leasing or buying: your options

Extended hire from a rental company. The most realistic option for one to six months. You keep the flexibility of a rental, and the company handles insurance and maintenance. But the price has to be negotiated, and there are few vans in high season.

Leasing (renting in Spain). You can lease an adapted van for a monthly fee. But contracts usually last several years. They also ask for a Spanish ID number (DNI or NIE), proof of income and a credit check. It suits residents, not visitors.

Buying. Only makes sense if you will spend most of every year in Spain, and adds paperwork, insurance and resale.

What to ask before you agree

  • What is the total price for the whole period? Is there a discount after a number of weeks?
  • Is there a mileage limit?
  • How much is the deposit, and how is it held?
  • Who pays for maintenance and breakdowns?
  • Can you swap the van if something fails?

Make sure the van suits your chair: here is what to check.

How AbleVan can help

Tell us where you will be, for how long and what chair you use. We ask rental companies whether they can offer an extended hire and only send you an offer if one can. If nobody can, we tell you straight away and you owe nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is long-term wheelchair accessible van hire possible in Spain?

Sometimes, but it is not a standard product. Very few companies publish monthly rates, so long hires have to be requested and agreed case by case. Ask as early as you can.

Can a visitor lease an adapted van in Spain?

Rarely. Leasing contracts for adapted vans are usually several years long and ask for a Spanish ID number (DNI or NIE) and proof of income, so they suit residents rather than visitors.
