Wheelchair accessible van hire at Madrid-Barajas Airport

Flying into Madrid with a wheelchair user? Tell us your dates and your chair, and we'll find a ramp van that fits, ready for when you land.

Updated 18 October 2026 · AbleVan

In short: AbleVan helps travellers arriving at Madrid-Barajas Airport hire a self-drive van with a wheelchair ramp. You send a free request with your dates and your group; we check with rental companies which van suits your wheelchair and where it can be handed over, and email you an offer within 24 hours. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Why a self-drive accessible van

A transfer will get you from the airport to your hotel. A van of your own gives you the rest of the trip: day trips, dinners out and getting around without booking a vehicle every time you leave the hotel. Your own wheelchair and your luggage travel with you wherever you go.

How it works when you arrive by air

  1. Send us your request with your dates and how many people are travelling. Add your flight number and terminal in the comments box.
  2. We check with rental companies which ramp vans are available and suit your wheelchair, and where they can hand the van over: at the airport, at your hotel or at their office.
  3. You get an offer by email within 24 hours, with the vehicle, the handover point, the total price including taxes, the deposit and the cancellation terms.
  4. If you accept, we book it and send you the confirmation. Nothing is booked or charged until then.

What we check before offering you a van

  • Ramp length, slope and weight limit, and how it is deployed.
  • Door height and width compared with your chair, with the user seated.
  • Interior space and headroom for your wheelchair.
  • How many seats and wheelchair places there are.
  • The restraint system that secures the chair.
  • Luggage space, which matters a lot after a flight.

Assistance inside the airport

Madrid-Barajas has an assistance service for passengers with reduced mobility, run by Aena, the Spanish airport operator, and called Sin Barreras (Without Barriers). When you arrive, staff help you off the plane, help with your luggage if needed and take you to the meeting point you choose. There are meeting points in the arrivals area and in the car park.

  • Request it at least 48 hours before your flight: through your airline or travel agent when you book, or directly with Aena on its website, its app or by phone on +34 91 321 10 00.
  • This service is provided by Aena and is separate from AbleVan. Full details are on Aena's website.

Common questions

Can the van be waiting for me at the terminal?

It depends on the rental company. We ask for you, and your offer says exactly where you pick the van up and whether there is any extra cost.

Do I need my wheelchair measurements to send a request?

No. If we find a possible van, we'll ask for the length, width and height with the user seated, and the weight if you know it. Approximate figures are fine.

What do I need to drive the van?

Each rental company sets its own requirements, such as minimum age, driving licence and a card for the deposit. We include them in your offer.

I'm arriving somewhere else in Spain. Can you help?

Ask us. We start with Madrid, and for other destinations we'll tell you straight away whether we can help.
