Driving in Spain with a disability: licence, Blue Badge and what the van must carry
Driving in Spain yourself is often the easiest way to get around with a wheelchair. These are the rules and paperwork that catch visitors out.

In short: UK visitors can usually drive in Spain on their UK photocard licence (check GOV.UK before travelling). A standard car licence covers ramp vans. The Blue Badge is recognised differently by each local authority. Since 2026, Spanish-registered vehicles must carry a V16 warning beacon.
Your licence for driving in Spain
UK visitors can generally drive in Spain on their UK photocard licence. Rules for visitors can change, so check GOV.UK's guidance on driving abroad before you travel. For a ramp van you do not need anything special: a standard car licence (category B) covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg and nine seats. Each rental company sets its own minimum age and years of driving.
The Blue Badge in Spain
There is no single rule for the whole country. According to GOV.UK, recognition of the UK Blue Badge is decided by local administrations, including in the Balearic and Canary Islands. Carry the badge, a translation and supporting documents such as a doctor's letter, and check local rules before you park.
Hand controls
If the person driving needs hand controls, ask for an adapted car rather than a ramp van. A few rental companies offer them, mostly at the busiest airports, and they are booked up quickly. Ask for "coche adaptado con mandos manuales".
The V16 beacon
Since 1 January 2026, vehicles registered in Spain must carry a V16 emergency beacon, which replaces the warning triangles. A rental van registered in Spain should have one on board: ask where it is at handover and how to switch it on, because you will need it if you break down.
Before you set off
At handover, ask to be shown how the ramp and restraints work, check the fuel policy and keep the breakdown number to hand. If you are new to the van, practise loading the chair once in the car park before you leave. And make sure the van fits your chair before you book: here is what to check.
